Nintendo And Amazon Fight Against Counterfeit Sellers

Nintendo and Amazon have teamed up to tackle the issue of counterfeit sellers that the Japanese giant said illegally sold fake amiibo and video game cartridges in the digital marketplace.

The companies filed a joint lawsuit in October 2023 against sellers who were illegally selling Nintendo items on Amazon.

Amazon and Nintendo are accusing these sellers of trademark infringement, false advertising, breach of contract, and violation of the Washington Consumer Protection Act.

Recently, they requested a default judgment of over $7 million in statutory damages against those sellers, and it is fair considering that they sold at least $2,343,386 worth of fake Nintendo stuff from 2019 to 2023.

The counterfeit items included popular amiibo like those from The Legend of Zelda and Animal Crossing franchises, as well as Nintendo 3DS cartridges and other relevant Nintendo products.

Amazon has shut down the accused accounts, and both companies are working together to strengthen the detection and removal of counterfeit products from Amazon’s stores.

It’s a significant step to protect brands and ensure customers get genuine products, because as we know, selling counterfeit goods has become a profitable business for unscrupulous people.

In the meantime, Amazon and Nintendo will have to await the court’s decision on the default judgment.

We hope that more brands follow in their footsteps to fight against the problem of counterfeit sellers in the short term. What do you think about that?
