We’re just over a month away from the launch of Star Fox on Switch 2, and the burning question is whether Nintendo has finally revisited a project Shigeru Miyamoto once teased: an Arwing amiibo.
Just a few days ago on our blog, we explored the possibility of a new amiibo line tied to the upcoming title. However, we deliberately set aside the Arwing discussion to take a deeper dive into its real chances—analyzing the factors that could finally make this long-awaited project a reality.
The Background: Why It Feels Real
Back in 2016, during the promotion of Star Fox Zero, Miyamoto confirmed in interviews with outlets like IGN and Game Informer that Nintendo had actively experimented with a unique Arwing starfighter amiibo.
The concept was ambitious: a transformable figure that could shift from the classic aerial ship into its Walker ground form. Ultimately, Nintendo shelved the idea, citing strict child safety standards and the difficulty of fitting a transforming mechanism into the standard amiibo scale.
Yet, the idea never fully disappeared. In 2018, Nintendo’s collaboration with Ubisoft on Starlink: Battle for Atlas brought a modular Arwing toy to the Switch version, proving the physical concept could work. More recently, the King Dedede & Tank Star amiibo surprised collectors with moving parts, showing that innovation in the line is alive and well.

Overcoming Child Safety and Scale
The Arwing’s sharp wings, pointed edges, and thin parts posed major safety risks when miniaturized in 2016. Adding moving parts only made the prototype more fragile and unsafe for younger audiences. However, Ubisoft’s project demonstrated how smart design tweaks can reduce hazards, making a transformable Arwing amiibo technically feasible today.
Scale, once a deal-breaker, is no longer a barrier. With the Switch 2 era, Nintendo has already embraced varied figure sizes, as seen with Kirby Air Riders and Mario Galaxy. A larger-scale Arwing amiibo wouldn’t look out of place at all.

The only real sticking point is the price. A transformable, oversized amiibo would likely cost more than standard figures. But let’s be honest—for collectors and fans, it would be an absolute must-have regardless of price.
What Do You Think?
Nintendo never fully closed the door on this project. So, will the Arwing amiibo finally be revealed before June 25, or will it remain tucked away in a drawer? Share your thoughts in the comments!
