Without a doubt, the reveal of Mineru’s Construct design instantly brought back memories of Bowser Jr.’s render for the Super Mario line—the amiibo that never was.
While the production delays surrounding Mineru’s Construct sparked forum speculation that Nintendo might cancel it entirely, clear differences separate it from the lost Bowser Jr. design. For Mineru’s Construct, Nintendo confirmed the launch but left the final design and release date up in the air—a move most fans interpreted as a standard internal delay.
As for the amiibo render of the Koopa prince, the story is far more peculiar. For those unfamiliar, let’s rewind to late 2016, when Nintendo released a promotional video for Mario Party: Star Rush on the Nintendo 3DS to showcase amiibo support. In that video, actual Super Mario line amiibo designs appeared within the game—including Bowser Jr. At the end of the clip, Nintendo even teased the imminent release of new figures from the series, such as Rosalina, Daisy, and Waluigi.
At the time, everything suggested Bowser Jr. would receive a second figure beyond his 2015 Super Smash Bros. release, and fans expected an announcement to follow soon. Yet nearly a decade later, we’re still wondering what happened—and whether it will ever reach store shelves.
